HypnoBirthing®, The Mongan Method, is considered the “Gold Standard” of birthing with hypnosis. It is a childbirth education method that empowers women to achieve more gentle, natural births. It is both a philosophy and a set of tools for using self-hypnosis techniques and scripts to achieve a focused awareness and level of relaxation that will allow for a much more comfortable, easy birth.
Women have been conditioned to expect pain in childbirth; however, there is no physiological reason for this to occur. The pain is a result of the fear-tension-pain cycle. Through this program of self-hypnosis and education, pregnant women and their birth companions will learn to release emotions tied to fear-based stories and misinformation, thus helping them to view birth as normal. Once the fears have been released, the body is free to open gently and easily—without pain—thus ensuring a more gentle birth for both mom and baby. Moms learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in the calm and gentle way that nature intended. Just as important, both moms and their birth companions learn to trust their instincts and intuition, which will serve them in parenting effectively and in many other areas of their lives.
First-time HypnoBirthing® moms discuss their birth experiences and the benefits to them and their babies
My HypnoBirthing® Experience
I was originally a client of HypnoBirthing®, having used the method to deliver each of my three children gently and naturally. With each birth, I experienced sensations of waves of tightening or pressure, but no pain. While HypnoBirthing® cannot make any guarantees about what sensations each individual woman will or will not experience during the birthing process, HypnoBirthing® does help return birth to a more calm, peaceful experience, thereby helping women birth more gently, more easily, and with dignity. In fact, the ease with which I was able to bring my children into this world is what prompted me to become a Certified HypnoBirthing® Practitioner. I also have experience with a variety of birthing environments, having delivered my eldest child in a hospital, my middle child in a birthing center, and my youngest child at home.
Joyful Birth HypnoBirthing® Courses
The course is taught in five 2.5-hour classes. Pregnant women attend the classes with the support person of their choice—husband, life partner, other family member, doula, labor companion, etc. The course offers the following benefits:
- Empowers parents with techniques to achieve a gentle, calm birth
- Teaches deep levels of relaxation to eliminate the fear that causes tension and pain
- Greatly reduces and often eliminates the need for chemical painkillers and drugs
- Helps keep oxygen supplied to baby during birthing
- Reduces and often eliminates fatigue during labor, leaving the mother alert, fresh, and with energy to bond with her baby following the birth
- Gives the birthing companion an integral role in the birthing
- Embraces the concept of pre-birth parenting
- Teaches breathing techniques that allow a woman to gently breathe her baby into the world without the violence of hard, physical pushing
A textbook (with CD), many handouts, and a relaxation CD are included in the cost of the course.
All courses are taught out of my home in Olney, Maryland. Ample, free street parking is available.

“We are so thankful for the teachings of HypnoBirthing. It made Connor’s birth truly a team effort. We can say we did it together. I couldn’t have done it without my husband. I experienced all of the benefits of HypnoBirthing. I didn’t realize I was in labor until about five hours before Connor’s birth; we were at the hospital less than three hours. Labor was easy and quick…I would not change a thing. I am forever grateful to you for teaching us the HypnoBirthing techniques; because of what we learned we created exactly the birth we wanted.” – Connor’s Mom

“I used the HypnoBirthing techniques during the labor and it helped tremendously! … Using the surge breathing and relaxing my jaw with coaching from [my husband] and one of the nurses had amazing impact on the effect of the surges. We had the natural birth that we hoped for and have an alert, relaxed baby. We are so thankful that we found you and the HypnoBirthing program. Your class allowed us to have the birthing experience we hoped for.” – Callen’s Mom

“I want you to know how much we appreciate all of your support. The breathing and visualization techniques we learned in our HypnoBirthing class were so helpful and centering during Annalivia’s birth. I can’t thank you enough. [Annalivia] continues to be that peaceful baby we first met; she only cries to let us know that she is hungry, and maintains the sweetest disposition when she is awake. We feel so blessed!” – Annalivia’s Mom

“I feel very fortunate that we came across the HypnoBirthing method at the right time during pregnancy and were able to take a class with you with plenty of weeks left to practice. I found relaxation techniques and meditation extremely helpful as it allowed me to stay calm and relaxed during weeks prior to labor and anticipate the big event with excitement and positive thoughts. During labor, HypnoBirthing tools helped maintain relaxation and resulted in a fairly fast labor process where I did not even realize how far I had progressed. Thank you, Lori, for sharing your knowledge and personal inspiration that allowed us to have a peaceful and happy birthday of our baby boy!” - Alexander’s Mom

“I want to quickly thank you and let you know that the birthing experience exceeded my expectations and I totally attribute that to the work we did with you and HypnoBirthing! The labor was very fast, and I found the breathing techniques very helpful and effective for the surges. The main thing was I felt very calm. My doctor commented later that he didn’t believe I was in labor because I was so calm, and all of the nurses kept also being surprised as things progressed. Anyway, a big, huge THANK YOU!!” - Boden’s Mom

“We had a totally natural birth and I was in labor for just about ten hours total. I have to admit, after practicing and trying to learn the different relaxation, deepening and visualization techniques, I’m not sure I consciously used any of them! But the whole positive, relaxed attitude and surge breathing served me very well during labor. I just remember thanking God for each surge as it came and for the amazing process of which we were a part. We can’t thank you enough for your positivity, encouragement and knowledge. Thank you for helping us make this such a wonderful experience!” - Huck’s Mom

“I am so grateful we took this class; it was so much help during labor. It also helped Matt get very involved with preparing for birth. While I was in the tub, Matt read me the HypnoBirthing relaxation script. It was amazing. I was so relaxed that two hours passed and I thought it had been five minutes. I was in heaven!” – Daisy’s Mom

“The HypnoBirthing was fantastic! Lynn was in the zone through the long transition period and was practically sleeping between surges. The midwife and hospital staff were amazed that she was so relaxed through it all and that the baby’s heart rate was so calm throughout the entire process… We are happy to report that we had the calm natural birth that we were looking for and Lynn is doing great, with minimal pain/soreness. We are now looking forward to the great journey of parenthood after a great start that was everything we could have wanted!” – Reese’s Dad

“Thank you so much for accommodating us! Your private class was a wonderful experience. Using the HypnoBirthing relaxation techniques that we learned in class helped us to bring our large baby (11 pounds!) into this world naturally. Looking forward to the upcoming infant massage class with you!” – Daniel’s Mom and Dad

“I am so thankful to have taken the Hypnobirthing course with Lori! The techniques we learned and knowledge we gained from the course empowered us to have the birth we wanted. I felt calm and confident heading to the hospital the night our baby girl, Lula, was born. Lula never cried and looked right at us when she came out. She remains the calm and peaceful baby that arrived that day. Thank you to Lori for the techniques we needed for a beautiful birth!” – Lula’s Mom

WHO: You and your baby. Infant massage class works best if your baby is between 4 weeks (i.e., 1 month) and 7-8 months old (i.e., not yet crawling). Toddlers who are 2+ years old also love the relaxation and attention of massage. In between 8 months and 24 months old, children tend to be too active exploring their world to enjoy being still.
WHAT: Infant Massage Course. I will teach you how to massage your baby, and you will do the actual massaging. You will learn the mechanical massage strokes for performing a full-body massage on your baby, all while having the opportunity to bond with your child. In addition, you will learn massage routines for special circumstances, in order to help ease baby’s colic, gas pains, latching difficulties, and/or sleeplessness.
WHERE: At my home in Olney, Maryland.
WHEN: The course will be taught in four to five (4-5) sessions of 1 hour-1½ hours each. Why the range of class dates and times? The babies in the class will let us know when they feel finished each day. If one baby is feeling “done” while the others are still enjoying their massages, we will continue with the class. When a majority of the babies are expressing the need to end their massages, we will “call it a day” with the class. The class will most likely take four sessions, but the extra session is built-in as a back-up in case we need the time to finish learning all of the strokes for a complete full-body infant massage. The class dates are scheduled as follows
Class #1: Thursday, February 20, 2014, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Class #2: Thursday, February 27, 2014, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Class #3: Thursday, March 6, 2014, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Class #4: Thursday, March 13, 2014, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Class #5: Thursday, March 20, 2014, 10:00-11:30 a.m. (This class will only take place if necessary.)
WHY: Because it’s fun, it helps baby feel good, and it helps you bond with your baby! Other benefits of infant massage are:
Benefits to Babies
- Produces endorphins, nature’s relaxant, as well as oxytocin, the love and bonding hormone; in other words, touching your baby helps them know that they are loved!
- Helps infants learn about their shape and boundaries of their bodies (i.e., better individuation)
- Promotes attachment
- Encourages muscular coordination
- Aids in healthy blood circulation, as relaxed muscles absorb and then disperse more blood (aiding in venous return)
- Helps with digestion through stimulation of the vagus nerve
- Promotes calm and relaxation
- Enhances immune system function by increasing white blood cell count
- Relieves colic, constipation, and reflux
- Improves sleep patterns
- Assists babies in releasing any birth issues they may be holding on to
- Acquaints babies with “good touch”
Benefits to Families
- Parents learn to trust themselves when touching and interacting with their babies
- Offers fathers a chance to bond with baby as effectively through massage as mothers do through breastfeeding
- Serves as a calming ritual for the entire family
- Gives parents a chance to communicate with their baby and vice versa
- Offers a chance for older children to assist with the massage (e.g., standing by with lotion) while waiting their turn
- Introduces a deep level of confidence and trust between parent and child
- Contributes to positive values and behaviors as baby grows (well-adjusted children generally grow into well-adjusted adults)
HOW: Bring yourself, your baby, a couple of extra diapers, and a towel or blanket that you don’t mind getting messy. I will provide handouts as well as the lotion that we will use for the massage.
COST: $100 for the course series.
